Sunway Group president Chew Chee Kin has been conferred the Darjah Panglima Setia Makhota (PSM), which carries the title ‘Tan Sri’, by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in conjunction with His Majesty’s birthday.
Chew joined Sunway Group in 1981, and helmed the Group as president from 1999. Alongside Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Chew steered Sunway’s growth to become one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates with 13 business divisions with a market capitalisation of close to RM 17 bil as at end-2019. Sunway Group is now present in 50 locations worldwide.
In 2011, he led the merger between Sunway City Bhd and Sunway Holding Bhd. Since then, Sunway Bhd had more than doubled its revenue as of end-2019.
Chew currently drives Sunway Group’s digital transformation agenda, accelerating the Group’s nation-building efforts to innovate for solutions for a sustainable future, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
He stewards Sunway’s mission to transform Sunway Group’s flagship township Sunway City Kuala Lumpur into a model smart and sustainable city of the 21 st century – a “living lab” for sustainable urban living in the future.
An advocate for quality education, Chew was instrumental in the development of Sunway University and Monash University Malaysia as well as the inception of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise.
The other recipients of the PSM award are Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) chairman Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh, Lotus Corporation Bhd CEO Datuk R. Doraisingam, Platinum Victory Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Gan Yu Chai and SENA Group of Companies founder and managing director Datuk Tan Boon Hock, who is also Optimax Holding Bhd founder and director.
